The Rev. Donald M. Smith, 75, died Feb. 18 at Lorien Nursing Home in Mt. Airy where he'd been since 2005. The Rev. Jeff Odom officiated at a funeral service Feb. 22 at Crossroads Community Church in Westminster, assisted by Pastor Reid Robinette. Interment is in the Mt. Olive UMC cemetery in Mt. Airy.

Smith received his Master of Divinity from Wesley Seminary in 1972. He served the Morgan Charge from 1971-1978, Ferndale UMC from 1978-1983 and Trinity UMC in Frederick for one year. In 1984 he was appointed to Rockland UMC in Ellicott City and stayed until he retired in 1997 to his beloved cabin in Hedgesville, W. Va. He continued to preach part-time.

During his years in the ministry he served on mission trips to Costa Rica, Kentucky and West Virginia. He was also very involved in the Maryland Emmaus Community.

He and Elizabeth Feguson married in 1955 and had four children.

He was a standout athlete in basketball and football at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville and his love of sports continued throughout his life.

Among the things he most enjoyed were telling a good joke, gardening, whitewater canoeing and sharing a cup of coffee with just about anyone. Some of his most cherished memories were of vacations he shared with his children and grandchildren over the years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are son Steven Montgomery Smith of Westminster; daughters Stephanie Ann Price of Frederick, Susan Jane Belt of Reisterstown and Sherrie Jean Harrison of Westminster; and 12 grandchildren.
