Obituaries - December 6, 2010 - Varner-Belle Kannenberg

Varner-Belle Kannenberg, 90, the widow of the late Rev. Karl R. Kannenberg, died from colon cancer Dec. 6, 2010, at her caregiver's home in Chambersburg, Pa.  A funeral service was held at the Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home in Greencastle, Pa., Dec. 9, with Pastor Daniel Barnes officiating. Burial was in Meadowridge Memorial Park in Baltimore, next to her husband.

She and the Rev. Karl R. Kannenberg married in 1948. They had two children.

He was a graduate of Wesley Seminary as a local pastor. From 1981 to 1990, he served Marley UMC in Glen Burnie, Faith UMC in Pasadena, and Calvary in Ridgeley, W. Va. Due to ill health, he retired from Calvary at the end of December 1990. They had been married 50 years when he died in July, 1998.

Varnie, as she was called, Kannenberg was on the Baltimore-Washington Conference staff as a secretary from 1985-1990. After her husband's death she moved to Greencastle to be near her son, and attended the Senior Center there, where she enjoyed helping in the kitchen. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Greencastle.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter and a granddaughter.

Survivors include a son, Robert Kannenberg, of Shady Grove, Pa., a granddaughter, two step-granddaughters, a number of step great grandchildren; and two step great-great grandchildren.
