John F. Leitzel, 95, the spouse of the late Rev. Virginia “Doris” Leitzel, died from congestive heart failure Dec. 21, 2013, at the Joseph Richey Hospice in downtown Baltimore. A funeral service was held Jan. 4 at Patapsco UMC where he was a member. It was officiated by Pastor Katie J. Grover.

He was born in Coatesville, Pa., the son of Alvin Leitzel Sr. and the former Esther Anna Keefer, a homemaker. The family moved to Dundalk in 1931 and later lived in Sparrows Point. Mr. Leitzel was a 1935 graduate of Sparrows Point High School and attended Strayer, Bryant and Stratton Business College at Charles and Fayette streets.

He enlisted in the Army Air Forces in 1944, and worked as secretary to a colonel. His service took him to Bury St. Edmunds in England and Wiesbaden, Germany.

He and Virginia “Doris” Mae Hines were married in 1948. She was ordained in 1995, well after each of them had retired. From 1993-1996, she served two churches on the Susquehanna Charge in Havre de Grace, from which she retired at the mandatory age rules (70). She died in 2010.

After the war, John Leitzel went to college in business administration and earned a degree at the University of Maryland, College Park. He began as a claims adjuster for Farm Bureau Insurance and later was a Nationwide agent and owner who had his own business in an office at Old North Point Boulevard and Wise Avenue in Baltimore. He later sold the business and worked for Kroh, Miller and Knight. He retired in 1980.

Survivors include two sons, John Spencer Leitzel of Dundalk and James Allen Leitzel of Chicago; two daughters, Janet Lee Leitzel of Reisterstown and Susan L. Kelly of Bel Air; and three grandchildren.

Condolences may be sent to his son and caretaker the past two years, Spencer Leitzel, 7935 Wise Ave., Baltimore, MD 21222-3342.
