Obituaries - August 24, 2011 - Rev. Gerald "Jerry" Zimmerman

Rev. Gerald R. "Jerry" Zimmerman, 93, died Aug. 24, 2011. A memorial service was held on Aug. 29 in the Community Center at Bethany Village in Mechanicsburg, Pa. A funeral service was held Aug. 30 at Musselman's Funeral Home in Lemoyne, Pa.

Zimmerman was an Associate Member who had served in churches for 28 years. He was appointed to Providence UMC in Towson in 1980 and pastored the church until 1985 when he retired and was accorded a Pastor Emeritus status at Providence UMC. In his retirement, he served an interim appointment at St. Johns of Hamilton UMC in Baltimore, and as a visiting pastor at Towson UMC.

Prior to becoming a minister, Zimmerman was a printer for 30 years, working for the Harrisburg Telegraph and the Baltimore Sun newspapers. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Navy's secret Codebreaking and Signals Intelligence unit in North Africa.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 945, and a member of Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #116 for 60 years.

His wife of 66 years, Ruth Moody Zimmerman, preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons: Lt. Col. Jeffrey Zimmerman USMC (Ret.) of Severna Park and Jere Zimmerman of Boiling Springs, Pa.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a step-grandson.
