Rev. Theodore Tietge

The Rev. Theodore Tietge, 77, a retired Elder, died of multiple myeloma under hospice care at his home July 30. The Rev. Byron P. Brought officiated at a memorial service at Calvary UMC in Annapolis Aug. 4. The Rev. Edgar Hammerslea gave the meditation.

As a student at Union Theological Seminary in New York, Tietge served a couple churches in New York, including Salem EUB in Brooklyn. In 1958 he was appointed to Salem EUB in Upper Falls and served there during the merger with the Methodists. He received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary. He served Grace UMC in Aberdeen from 1970-1974, when he was appointed to Calvary UMC in Annapolis, which he served until his stroke in 1978. He retired on disability at the age of 46.

Tietge was in the first generation of his German immigrant family to be born in the United States and grew up as part of an active church family at Salem EUB in Baltimore.

Tietge and Nancy Phillips married in 1956. They had two daughters.

Survivors include his wife, daughters Carrie Porco and Paula Sanner, and four grandsons.
