The Rev. Irvin Charles Lockman, 80, died Aug. 14. The Rev. Jeremiah Williams officiated at his funeral Aug. 22 at Metropolitan UMC in Baltimore.

Lockman grew up in Ames UMC in Baltimore and actively participated in district, conference and Northeastern Jurisdictional events.

He was ordained in the Washington Conference in 1952. He was appointed to St. Matthews in Baltimore in 1956, where he served for two years before returning to the New York Conference for 10 years. In 1970, he was appointed to Christ UMC in Baltimore.

From 1975-1980 he was the Hagerstown District Superintendent. From 1980 to 1989, he served Metropolitan UMC in Baltimore, then he was appointed to Asbury in
Annapolis. He remained there until his retirement in 1995. In 2002, he was called out of retirement to pastor Macedonia UMC in Gambrills for two years.

His degrees included pastoral counseling, as well as sociology and theology. He graduated from Howard University Divinity School in 1955 and received a Doctor of Ministry degree in 1983 from New York Theological Seminary. He held many positions in the church and communities in which he lived, including the NAACP, BUILD, Academy of Parish Clergy, Howard Divinity School alumni, Morgan Christian Center and the United Methodist Historical Society. He was a delegate to the World Methodist Council meeting in Dublin, Ireland, and the World Council of Churches in Evanston, Ill.

Among his many honors and awards are the Frederick Douglass Award, the Bishop James K. Mathews District Superintendent Award and the Joseph C. Hill Award. He was inducted into the Preachers Hall of Fame at Simpson-Hamline UMC in Washington.

He and Joan Harriet Carroll were married in 1958 and had one daughter, Joanne Alyse Lockman.
