News from Across the Conference: To Haiti, with love

A group of Howard University students spent spring break on a mission trip to Haiti.
WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Over spring break, eight students at Howard University participated in a Volunteers in Mission trip in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. They were led by the Rev. Malcolm Frazier, campus minister, and the Rev. Adrienne Terry, pastor of St. Matthews UMC in Baltimore.

The students gave the children at the Wings of Hope Orphanage in Fermathe, all of whom have mental and physical challenges, plenty of love, attention, games, arts and crafts, a party and a visit to a petting zoo, Frazier reported.

They also spent time at Mother Theresa's Home for Abandoned Babies, where they helped nuns care for the babies and older children.

The students had an opportunity to learn about Haiti, to have an authentic Haitian meal in the home of their hosts, visit a sugar plantation and meet a voodoo priest.

Before leaving the country, they spent a day at St. Joseph's Home for Boys, where all the residents are former street boys, now living in a structured spiritual environment. The boys reciprocated the visit with a performance of the Resurrection Dance Theater. 'It was a highlight of our time there,' Frazier said.
