Labor group receives ecumenism award

BETHESDA ? Each year at annual conference time, the Bishop's Award on Ecumenism is presented to an ecumenical ministry in which United Methodist churches participate.

This year, the Rev. Rachel Cornwell, associate pastor at Bethesda UMC, accepted a check for $1,000 for Interfaith Voices for Worker Justice. She is co-chair with Rabbi Marc Israel of the ministry.

Interfaith Voices for Worker Justice, started in 2003, 'is a diverse group of people of faith, both clergy and laity, who seek to make a difference in the economic well-being of our community,' Cornwell said. 'We are deeply troubled by the growing disparity between the rich and the poor. We believe that our faiths require that we create a world with more justice, more compassion and signs of hope,' she added.
