News From Across The Conference: Homeless couple married at church

Posted by Bwcarchives on

OXON HILL ? When St. Paul UMC hosted the Warm Nights rotating emergency shelter late in March, they didn't know they'd also have a wedding.

Working with Prince Georges County's Community Ministry Office, volunteers from the church have provided sleeping space, meals and other supplies for a week for homeless people for the past five years. This year they averaged 18 guests a night.

On the last evening, the night before Easter, they were a special blessing to two of the guests, Alice Smith and Lewis Leonard. The Rev. Allen Stewart performed a service of holy matrimony for them in the sanctuary of the church. Members of the church and the couple's friends from the shelter shared in the occasion.

The wedding party ? bride, groom, bride's maid and best man ? were decked in wedding attire, corsages, boutonnieres and all ? which the church provided, along with a reception in the fellowship hall. The church also gave the couple a special gift, a night in a hotel, Stewart said.
