News From Across The Conference: Churches recognized for aid to refugees

COLUMBIA ? Each year the United Methodist Committee on Relief gives certificates to churches that have excelled in their efforts with refugees and immigrants, reported Darlynn McCrae, conference refugee resettlement chairwoman.

The recipients for 2004 include:

  • Salem UMC in Keedysville for its sponsorship of Ajal, Silver and their children from Uganda;
  • Bethany UMC in Ellicott City as a donating church; and
  • Three churches that provide sites for Justice for Our Neighbors, an immigrant counseling and advocacy ministry: Baltimore Hispanic Ministry in Baltimore, First UMC in Hyattsville and Emory UMC/Emory Beacon of Light in Washington, D.C.
