Children welcome the Hiss UMC VIM team to Honduras.

BALTIMORE ? Fourteen people from Hiss UMC, including a doctor and nurses, spent more than a week in Honduras in mid-July on a mission trip under the auspices of the Mennonite Church.

The seven-member medical team visited remote villages, often without electricity, where they gave vitamin A to children and treated minor ailments.

The seven-member construction team, including the Rev. Mark Smiley, helped rebuild a school house in a village that is still trying to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Mitch in October 1998.

The team carried 17 large suitcases of donated shoes, clothes and school supplies for the children, as well as medications and medical supplies.

'Honduras is a beautiful, but very poor country and the people were warm and gracious,' said Dianne Thompson, the church communicator, who worked on the construction team.

Before coming home, they enjoyed visits to a waterfall, a banana plantation, Tele Beach and the Mayan ruins of Capon.
