New UMCS center opens in Baltimore
BALTIMORE - Late last year, a new United Methodist Community Service (UMCS) center opened in Sharp Street UMC to offer assistance to people in need three days a week. It joins three other UMCS Service Centers in Baltimore, located at St. John?s of Hamilton, St. Mark?s and Homestead UMCs. A UMCS Communications Center is at Linthicum UMC.
The Sharp Street outreach ministry offers a food pantry, clothing, household furniture and help with utility cut-offs and evictions, all provided by volunteers, said Norma Burton, the Service Center director and church secretary. She also prepares a meal and goody bags for AIDS patients who meet at the church monthly.
UMCS Centers are established in areas 'where poverty abounds,' said the Rev. Don Llewellyn, coordinator. The congregations are willing to support the centers but often lack resources to do so. That?s where UMCS comes in, providing both financial and volunteer assistance.
