Native Americans volunteer to serve

Posted by Bwcarchives on

SILVER SPRING - Michael Virts, a member of the conference Native American Ministries (CONAM) and a Cherokee, recently led a group of volunteers on a mission to Navaho Land in Arizona.

The idea for a mission group to a Native American community came up at one of CONAM's prayer breakfasts, held regularly to bring Native Americans residing within the bounds of the conference together.

At Window Rock, the 11 volunteers repaired a church building inside and out, landscaped the grounds, visited residents in a Navaho nursing home and organized the church's community clothes shop.

The group presented the congregation with a poster from the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian that the museum commissioned from the famous Navaho artist Tony Abeyta, called 'Gathering from Four Directions.'
