OBITUARIES

Nancy Haskins Zabel
Zabel

Nancy Haskins Zabel, 77, died July 1 after a brief illness following surgery. A memorial service was held July 9 at Trinity UMC in Frederick, where she was a member. The Rev. Harold Wright officiated.

Zabel was an officer of the Womens Christian Temperance Union for 30 years. Her passion for mission led her to serve on a variety of committees in the conference and the denomination. She represented the Baltimore-Washington Conference several times as a lay delegate to General and Jurisdictional conferences.

She was married to the Rev. Walter J. Zabel, who died on April 1, 1999, just a few months after their golden wedding anniversary.

Zabel served with her husband during his 40-year career as a pastor at Great Falls, Brookfield Immanuel, Patapsco Freedom, Liberty Grove and College Park Methodist churches. He also served for a decade as Baltimore-Washington Conference secretary and pensions administrator.

When he retired in 1988, the couple became the first on-site curators of the Strawbridge Shrine in New Windsor, where they promoted Methodisms American founding place.

They later moved to Evanston, Ill. where she worked for the Womens Christian Temperance Union. Three years ago she moved back to Frederick.

Zabel is remembered by people like Wright, who knew her his whole life, as a motivating leader with a passion for helping those in need. 'She felt things deeply,' he said. 'She was a strong-willed woman of great faith.'

Zabel is survived by her son and daughter-in-law William and Dellana Zabel of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter Bonita 'Bonnie' Wilson, a member of St. Pauls UMC in Sykesville; two granddaughters and three great-granddaughters.
