Manidoken campers give to missions
KNOXVILLE – Campers at Camp Manidokan added to their learning and growth experiences by giving to someone they’d never met.
“We gave the suggestion of donating the money left in their accounts in the camp store – money for snacks, ice cream or T-shirts – to a mission,” said Chris Schleikert, director of Camp Manidokan.
Campers were first introduced to the idea at Wednesday night’s mission fair, where clean water was the topic and theme. They donated $392 to World Vision for a treadle pump for a village in Africa.
But that wasn’t all. The campers also learned about the Rev. Dan Randall, a United Methodist missionary to Latvia and director of Camp Wesley. He had stopped by Camp Manidokan earlier in the year to learn how it was run, and incidentally learned he and the Rev. Sarah Schleikert were seminary classmates.
Some of the campers wrote letters and sent games to the Latvian campers as part of their mission activity.
As camp wound down Friday, campers closed out their store accounts. With additional contributions from some parents, Camp Manidokan had $1,152 for Camp Wesley. The money will be used for camperships and renovation.
