The Rev. Wayne DeHart, new director of the office of Human Resources and Connectional Life for the Baltimore-Washington Conference, reports that information concerning retirement benefits for lay employees is now available from his office.

?The 2004 General Conference passed legislation endorsing retirement benefits for lay employees of the local church,? he said. ?We have information in our offices that can help churches follow that recommendation.?

Retirement benefits for lay employees are not required, DeHart said, but they should receive this benefit if they are at least 21 years old, have completed one year of service and work at least 1,040 hours a year (20 hours per week).

The General Conference recommendation stated that local churches may provide retirement benefits to lay employees in the form of an annual contribution equal to three percent of each qualifying employee?s compensation, DeHart said. ?If approved by the church, provision of this benefit should begin no later than Jan. 1, 2006.?

A brochure, ?A Retirement Plan for Lay Employees,? was mailed to local churches earlier this month. Extra copies and more information

is available by contacting Linda Gamble at (800) 492-2525, Ext. 479, or .
