LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

In response to the ebony bishops

Hey! Have you heard about the Birch (white), Cedar (red), Oak (tan), and Pine (yellow) Bishop summits to talk about other color-coded churches lack of health?

Orin W. Dooley, Jr.

A response is appropriate

Several years ago I attended a class during Leadership Days and heard Bishop Felton Edwin May say that he responded to every letter that was sent to him if it was signed. Well, a few years ago I did write but I never received a reply. Then two years ago, several individuals in my church wrote Bishop May with a very deep concern. Again, not one of us received a reply.

I thought of this as I read the editorial concerning President Bush in the Nov. 19 UMConnection.

Erik Alsgaard criticized President Bush for not meeting with the Council of Bishops. I couldnt help but compare his accusations with the bishops actions.

Bishop May could not somehow find time to reply. He knew the letters were all in disagreement with him. But maybe the real reason was no one cares no one important to Bishop May that is. He only angered members of a small rural church.

But out of common decency, he should have replied. To quote Mr. Alsgaard, In the absence of that, what should good United Methodists do, other than feel theyve been written off as a voice crying in the wilderness?

Council on Bishops is irrelevant

I would like to respond to the Nov. 5 editorial. Not to be neither demeaning nor disrespectful, but President Bush might view the council of bishops as many of us do irrelevant.

If there was ever a time that Christians worldwide should go to war it is now. The evil that is being spread as terrorism will not stop unless we stop it. Dialogue and rhetoric will not work. Weve seen that in the past.

We must remember that the terrorists started this thing many years ago. They are getting stronger and bolder and have even attacked our homeland and people all over the world.

The Council of Bishops needs to remove its collective head from the sand and see what is happening in the world.

Allegiance should be to God

Thanks to the Rev. Dean Snyder for his great commentary Judicial Council should rethink step aside mandate, in the Nov. 19 UMConnection.

There is something very wrong when any religious organization requires its members to give ultimate allegiance to the organization, and not to God.
