A box city lined the road by Mt. Zion UMC in Bel Air, where members camped out in cardboard boxes and tents Feb. 10 and 11 to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless in Harford County.

The event, Home Sweet Nowhere, focused on “the frozen and forgotten in our community,” said the Rev. Craig McLaughlin. The event drew attention to efforts to minister to the homeless and provided an opportunity to give funds and donate coats, sleeping bags and other items.

Twenty-six people, including McLaughlin and his wife Lisa, spent the night outside, where it snowed and temperatures hovered in the upper 20s. Joining them were three formerly homeless people; 80 others also stopped by to visit the site.

Box City PrayerMore than $3,000 was raised for One Church, One Home, a ministry of Mt. Zion and the community.

This ministry was created to inspire every church in Harford County to provide housing for one homeless family or individual. There are about 250 to 300 churches in Harford County and nearly as many homeless people.
