Historic circuit rider honored

Posted by Bwcarchives on

BARTON ? At each homecoming celebration on the fourth Sunday of September, the congregation of Barton UMC visits Morrison Cemetery. It?s one of the oldest cemeteries in Allegany County. The congregation remembers its past and pays respects to the Rev. William Shaw, founder of the town of Barton and a Methodist circuit rider, said an article in the Cumberland Times-News.

The grave sites include most of the original settlers of the area on the acre of land that the Morrison family set aside for the cemetery in the 1700s. Barton UMC adopted the cemetery in 1996.

Following the church service and lunch, the congregation moved to the cemetery where they laid a wreath and the Rev. John Park, who has led the church since his retirement 12 years ago, offered a prayer.
