Every November, members of Calvary UMC in Annapolis, spend the Thanksgiving holiday with members of a church in Xela, Guatemala. The church in a mid-size Mayan town in the central highlands is committed to providing a hospital for people in dozens of small villages.

Xela has a hospital building, but it is poorly equipped. Surgeon members of the church will staff the facility, providing service for all people.

Community UMC in Crofton members, Mike and Peggy Elliott, are planning to drive medical equipment and supplies to Xela in the conference disaster response vehicle in November.

Equipment and materials needed include: an endoscope, pediatric incubators and cribs, colonoscopy scope, centrifuges, portable x-ray equipment, portable ultrasound machine, IV infusion pumps, ventilators, dental equipment, office equipment, and more.

The Elliotts also hope to fill all available extra space in the truck with crutches, wheelchairs, walkers and any other small medical items that people can donate.

To help furnish some of the list, preferably by the end of September, or provide contacts that might help with the list, contact Peggy Elliott at

Send checks to Calvary UMC, 301 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis, MD 21401. Mark the checks 'Guatemala.'
