She and William Lewis were married in 1940, just after he graduated from Westminster Theological Seminary. Before moving to Arbutus in 1945, he served student charges on the Eastern Shore and the Great Falls Charge.

The couple lived in Arbutus for more than 30 years, until he retired in 1978. Working with him throughout those years, they built the church from a membership of 200 to more than 1,200.

After his retirement, the couple moved to Sharptown in Wicomico County. He died in 1990.

Helen Lewis was always involved in music, at Arbutus and later at the Salisbury church, where she and her husband both sang in the choir. She did a crossword puzzle everyday, her son said.

After her husband’s death, she lived by herself until shortly before she died and kept busy being an active grandmother to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, William E. Lewis, Jr., of Baltimore, a daughter, Susan Fritzel of Lutherville, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A sister also survives.

Condolences may be sent to William E. Lewis, P.O. Box 142, Sharptown, MD 21861.

Memorial donations may be made to Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, One Charles Center, 100 North Charles St., Suite 234, Baltimore, MD 21201.
