Health fair educates black community

Posted by Bwcarchives on

BALTIMORE - Former congressman Kweisi Mfume drew a good crowd when he spoke at Gwynn Oak UMC?s community health fair June 9. He addressed health issues of particular concern in the black community.

The event, conceived and organized by church member Sheila Hall, focused on alternative medicine. The morning sessions were held for family and friends who had contributed toward the Theodore Baylor Education Scholarship Fund for Alternative Medicine. Baylor was a young man who died from AIDS last year. They raised about $3,000.

The event had an added benefit of helping the community to know that Gwynn Oak UMC - the result of a merger of Orchard Park UMC and the historical St. Mark?s UMC that was sold last year - is a growing congregation, there to serve the community, Wright said.
