Local UM churches have provided more than $532,000 to relief efforts in Haiti.
On Jan. 12 an earthquake devastated the town of Port au Prince in Haiti. Within hours, the people of The United Methodist Church were in action, providing relief.

As of mid-April, 275 churches within the Baltimore-Washington Conference gave $532,331 in financial gifts to Haitian relief efforts. Of these, 125 contributed more than $1,000; nine churches provided more than $10,000 in aid; and Glen Mar UMC in Ellicott City and First Saints Community Church in Leonardtown gave more than $20,000 in funding to address the devastation.

Denominationwide, the United Methodist Committee on Relief reports that as of April 16, it collected $19.8 million for Haiti. UMCOR estimates that these gifts have positively affected the lives of more than 30,000 Haitians.

Relief and recovery efforts continue as part of UMCOR’s new three year, $10.4 million plan. Officials estimate that 75 percent of Port au Prince will need to be rebuilt.

Volunteers in Mission teams, UMCOR says, will be sought soon. More than 3,000 volunteers have already registered.
