George R. Allen - Obituary

Rev. George R. Allen, 80, a retired Elder, died Feb. 13 from cardiac arrest at Manor Care Rehab Center in Catonsville, where he had been since his birthday, Jan. 16. The Rev. Gertrude M. Greene officiated at his funeral Feb. 23 at Mt. Olivet UMC in Catonsville.

Gertrude M. Greene officiated at his funeral Feb. 23 at Mt. Olivet UMC in Catonsville. District Superintendent Eugene Matthews gave the eulogy and Bishop Joseph Yeakel also participated.

Allen served churches in the conference for more than 40 years, but they were few in number: Libertytown from 1955-1960, Barnesville from 1960-1975; and St. Paul in Baltimore, from 1975 to March, 1996, when he retired due to illness. After retirement, he served as a visitation minister at Mt. Olivet UMC.

His first wife, Emily, died in 1983. They had one son. He married Shirley Allen in 1986.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, a son, George Allen Jr., two stepdaughters, Wanda Moore of Tacoma, Wash., and Sandra Fennell of Olney; and seven grandchildren.
