Friends from 50 years ago gather

GEORGETOWN - Fifty friends who boogied in their basements in the 1950s shared their memories of bygone times at an anniversary reunion at Mt. Zion UMC Nov. 18. It was a rare occasion for African-Americans, who grew up in segregated Washington, D.C., in the 1950s.

Most of those who came to share their memories of Georgetown 50 years ago now live in Maryland and do not attend Mt. Zion UMC. But the oldest African-American church in Washington welcomed them anyway. The church was itself celebrating its 190th anniversary.
