Edna Lyles

Edna Marie Lee Lyles, 78 widow of the Rev. Floyd N. Lyles, died from pneumonia April 13 at a hospital in Baltimore. Her funeral, April 19, was conducted by the Rev. Reginald Ward at Ebenezer UMC in Ijamsville, the church her late husband had served and where she held her membership.

Edna Lee married Floyd Lyles in 1942 while he was in the U.S. Army. After serving in several overseas posts, he was discharged in 1945. A few years later he was licensed to preach and by 1965 was ordained a deacon. He served the Fairview/Woodville Charge from 1957 to 1960, New Market Charge from 1961-1972, and Centreville/New Market Charge from 1972 until he retired in 1985. He died unexpectedly six months later.

Edna Lyles was a housewife who served with her husband in the small churches he pastored. She was a member of United Methodist Women, and sang in Ebenezers Senior Choir.

Survivors include daughters Barbara Lyles Ambush, with whom she lived, and Beverly Lyles Hall of Baltimore; sons Floyd J. Lyles of Baltimore and Ronald Lee Lyles of Hagerstown; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Nair

The Rev. Robert Luverne Nair, 73 retired, died April 29 at his home, following complications from diabetes and kidney failure. The Revs. Richard Jewell, Lee Brotemarkle and Glenn Capacchione led the funeral service at Emmanuel-Bethel UMC in Cumberland May 2.

During his 45 years as an active pastor, Nair often served multi-church charges. Beginning in 1951, he served Evangelical United Brethren churches in the Cumberland area, including Antioch, Calvary-Bethel, Mt. Clinton and Hardy charges. In 1960 he was appointed to Shenandoah Station, and after the Methodist-EUB merger to Potomac Park-Ridgely in 1969. He served Mt. Airy-Poplar Springs Charge from 1975-1979 when he moved to Dawson. In 1985 he moved to Emmanuel in Cumberland, then to Emmanuel-Bethel in 1992, from which he retired in 1995.

In spite of his illnesses, Nair was active until a few months before his death. He served as chaplain for the Cumberland Fire Department, whose members participated in the funeral service. He was also chaplain for the East Gate Lodge of the Masonic Order and of the Shriners.

Nair married Arettia Cave in 1950. They had three sons, including two who died in infancy, and two daughters.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Brenda Wilson and Teresa Waugherman, son Robert Lee Nair, all of Cumberland, two granddaughters and one great grandson.
