FREDERICK – In February, sheriff’s deputies began receiving four weeks of training that will give them authority to arrest, detain and begin deportation proceedings for people they believe are in the country illegally.

Several community groups spoke out against this measure, among them was the Rev. Burton L. Mack of Asbury UMC.

"We should celebrate our commonality rather than emphasize our differences," he said. "This initiative has the potential to be more divisive and might not, in the long term, achieve what was intended."
