Delegate, evangelist, ecumenist recognized

Justice, potential and historical accomplishments were singled out and honored by many groups at the 218th session of the Baltimore-Washington Conference June 6-9 in Washington, D.C.

District of Columbia congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton was awarded the first Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. 101st U.S. Senator Award. The prize, which was given by the conference Committee on Drugs and Violence, honored Holmes Norton for work in promoting freedom, liberty and justice by nonviolent means.

The award recalls the legacy of Clarence M. Mitchell, the United Methodist civil rights leader from Baltimore.

The conference Board of Evangel-ization recognized the Rev. Mark Waddell and Wanda Smith for their outstanding work in evangelism with the Harry Denman Award. Waddell is a pastor at Catonsville UMC. Smith, a laywoman, attends A.P. Shaw UMC in Washington, D.C.

The Greater Homewood Interfaith Alliance of Baltimore won the Bishops Award on Ecumenism, handed out at the Board of Ecumenical and Interreligious Lifes Seeds of Faith dinner. The award of $1,000 will benefit the groups work with schools in impoverished Baltimore neighborhoods.

The Commission on Archives and History awarded honors to three congregations for their church histories. The winner in the churches under 200 members category was Salem UMC in Highlandtown; in the 200-499 members category the winner was Rockland UMC in Ellicott City, and Middletown UMC won for the category of 500 or more members.

The Baltimore-Washington caucus of Black Methodists for Church Renewal gave three financial awards to college students at its luncheon at Asbury UMC June 7. They were Margrita Cromer of Martin Luther King Memorial UMC in Baltimore and Sharon Edmond of Cecil UMC in Annapolis who each won $500 scholarships. Kayla Spears of West Liberty UMC in Marriotsville was awarded $200 to go toward her education.

At a dinner at Mt Vernon Place UMC June 6, the Methodist Federation for Social Action presented its annual Gods Foolish Ones award to Mary Baldridge for her work with the General Board of Global Ministries Womens Division.
