Conference historian honored

Posted by Bwcarchives on

BALTIMORE - When Old Otterbein UMC celebrated its annual Old Otterbein Day May 20, the Rev. Mernie Crane invited the Rev. Ed Schell to preach.

Then in a surprise gesture, the church historian, Daniel Fisher, whom Schell had baptized as a baby, unveiled a plaque naming the parsonage after Ed and Ruth Schell. The Schells lived in the parsonage from 1980 to 1988 and were the last residents there.

A surprised Schell offered a simple, 'Thank you. I?m flabbergasted.'

Crane explained to visitors that Schell, the well-known conference historian, always 'humbly focused attention away from himself.'

For many years Schell wrote a history column in the UMConnection. That column can now be found on the Lovely Lane Museum Web page, www.lovelylanemuseum.com.
