Churches host military for meal

Posted by Bwcarchives on

ABINGDON - Cokesbury UMC, along with Smith?s Chapel UMC in Churchville and Mt. Zion UMC in Bel Air, got together to share a Thanksgiving meal with trainees based at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. Thirty-four volunteers from the three churches put on the event. The hosts were expecting 30 soldiers to come and were delighted to suddenly have 62 and their drill sergeant arrive for lunch on Thanksgiving Day. Reminding themselves of the story of the loaves and fishes, the volunteers fed everyone. 'When the meal was done, there were very few leftovers to be found, and everyone walked away full,' said Steve Fulkrod, a member at Cokesbury. In addition to games, TV and videos, the Rev. Janet Brewer led a worship service in Cokesbury?s Chapel on the Hill. As the troops left, they received packages of candy prepared by the Smith?s Chapel children, and phone cards from individuals, churches and the local VFW/American Legion posts, Fulkrod reported.
