Churches collect winter coats

Posted by Bwcarchives on

PASADENA ? The cold, snow and ice that recently coated the region reminded fourth-graders at Highpoint Elementary School in northeast Anne Arundel County that many poor people didn?t have warm coats. The children started a coat collection at the school.

One child?s grandmother, a member of Faith UMC, asked Pastor John Taylor where to donate them. It wasn?t long before he and the Rev. Don Llewellan, coordinator of United Methodist Community Services, delivered more than 100 coats, ranging in sizes from infant through adult, to St. Mark?s UMC and Homestead UMC in Baltimore. ?People were already waiting in line when we pulled up,? Taylor said.

Across the state in Damascus, in Montgomery County, another coat collection was underway. The Damascus-Friendship Charge made an appeal for its eighth annual coat drive. By the end of the drive Feb. 1, they also had more than 100 coats, which were distributed by the Salvation Army, said the Rev. Frances Stewart.
