Church to celebrate 100 years

Posted by Bwcarchives on

TIMONIUM ? Timonium UMC will observe its 100th anniversary with a celebration dinner Oct. 7, that will include past clergy, and a celebration worship service Oct. 8.

A century ago, there were no churches in the area so a group of women started a Sunday school for their children. Baptist, Lutheran and Catholic children came and the parents soon banned together to form a house church. One meeting place was Timonium Mansions, today on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1904, the church affiliated with the Methodist Conference, and two years later Roberdeau McCormick donated the land for the first church building.

After World War II, the area and church expanded and in 1964, a larger church was built at the corner of Pot Spring and Chantry roads, where it now stands.

All that remains of the original church on York Road and Northwood Drive, is the bell, which is now mounted on the front lawn.
