CHEWSVILLE ? Bethel UMC began celebrating its 200th anniversary with a hymnfest Feb. 6. In addition to singing favorite hymns and special music, the program included hymns from different 'ages and stages,' said the Rev. John Schildt.

The Tree of Remembrance was dedicated at Bethel UMC?s 200th anniversary.

The congregation also dedicated a 'tree of remembrance' in the foyer of the new family life center, which is still under construction. The tree holds 200 brass leaves, small plaques commemorating members who have died over the life of the church. There is room for another 200, Schildt said.

Schildt, who retired last year, is still serving the church, where he has ministered since 1967. There are many other plans for the bicentennial anniversary, including a stamp cancellation in August, a service in a nearby barn where the congregation met in the early 19th century, and a homecoming in November. At that time, they hope the construction problems with the new addition will be solved and the building will be dedicated.
