Fortune Masamba, the 'adopted son' of Community UMC in Crofton, graduates from UMBC this spring.

Masamba, who is earning a degree in computer science, is 'immensely grateful,' to Community UMC for raising the money to bring his parents 7,900 miles from Harare, Zimbabwe, as well as to the congregation that adopted him for the past three years.

Members of Community UMC have made several mission trips to Zimbabwe since 1997. On one of those trips Charlie Moore, missions coordinator, and other volunteers offered to support Fortune Masamba if he wished to attend college in the United States. The church embraced him like a son,, Moore told the Sunday Capital.

Masamba has enjoyed the fast-paced life and ethnic diversity he's found here. He loves American football and college basketball. He's active in a Christian group, and attends Community UMC or worships on campus.
