Church provides special Christmas gift

ANNAPOLIS -When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf-coast area in August 2005, Trinity UMC, like hundreds of other churches, responded generously, raising $12,000 for hurricane relief. But the congregation wanted to do more to lend a helping hand.

A 16-member mission team left Nov. 11 for Dulac, La., a small shrimp-fishing community with a population that is 51 percent Native American. The team worked on the home of Ron and Crystal Lunk, helping them to move from a FEMA trailer to their house by Christmas.

Dulac is a community where people 'struggle just to make a living,' the Rev. Eddie Henry, who accompanied the team, told The Capital newspaper.

Before their departure, the church shipped 14 boxes of building supplies and items for pre-schoolers. Ruth Bullen, 85, a former teacher who went on the trip, got more than she could wish for. 'I went begging and they jumped at the chance to help,' she said of her former school colleagues. 'We had plenty to give to the 24 children in the community?s school.'

As a housewarming gift for the Lunks, the church sent $1,000 to buy appliances or other items for their new home.
