Church opens chapel for a prayer respite

HAMPSTEAD Although some church members wanted to tear it down to create much-needed parking space, a vacated office at St. Johns UMC has been turned into a place for prayer.

This building has served the community in one capacity or another for a dozen years or so, said the Rev. Kimberly Brown-Whale. Now it is a small prayer chapel.

The focal point of the prayer space is a mural painted by Kathy Mulhern, an artist in New Windsor. The painting shows people of all ages on a bridge, surrounded by waterfalls and mountains, moving toward Jesus who stands on the other side of the bridge.

Painting the mural was a work of faith for me, Mulhern told the Carroll County Times.

The prayer chapel is open during business hours and in the evening. Were just going to step out on faith and see what it brings, Brown-Whale said.

Methodists in wartime exhibited

BALTIMORE When the Council of Bishops met in Washington, D.C., in November, their spouses opened an exhibit on war and peace at Lovely Lane Museum.

The displays, which focus on World Wars I and II, include two chaplains communion sets, a Red Cross memorial quilt and a Jewish stole designed to be used with all religions, said Wanda Hall, a volunteer at the museum.

Contributions to the on-going exhibit are welcome, and will be returned in good condition, Hall said. Call the museum at (410) 889-4458 or e-mail . Items from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War will be especially appreciated.

Girls friendships addressed in new book

DUNKIRK Smithville UMC member, Kathy Widenhouse, has just released a book for pre-teen girls, The Christian Girls Gbwc_superusere to Friendship, published by Rainbow Publishers/ Legacy Press in San Diego.

The books magazine-style format addresses friendships and includes quizzes, crafts and activities that are especially appealing to young girls.

Young people ... are learning all kinds of things, Widenhouse said. How to have terrific friendships is one of them.

THURMONT Family and friends gathered at Weller UMC for the marriage of the Rev. Ruth Ann Miller, front row, holding flowers, to David Ward, front row, second from left, Sept. 13. It really had an ecumenical participation, the new Mrs. Ward said. Her brother, local pastor Max Miller from the Western Pennsylvania Conference, officiated. He was assisted by the Rev. Ken Tyson. The Rev. Linda Lambert from the Thurmont Church of the Brethren preached. The Rev. Richard Jenks from Florida was the celebrant for the Communion service. A Presbyterian pastor and a Roman Catholic priest helped the United Methodist laity serve the communion. In addition, Millers sister, husband and children, who are Southern Baptists, sang. A United Church of Christ grandson greeted guests and a grandson and grand daughter were acolytes. Frederick District superintendent, the Rev. Wayne De Hart, joined in the celebration.
