Church histories sought

If your church has not updated or written a history in the past 10 years, or have never done so, now is a good time to start.

As churches move forward into this new millennium, it is essential to preserve the identity, challenges, victories, and impact of congregations within their communities. To some this may seem like a daunting effort, but the staff at the Lovely Lane Museum in Baltimore is delighted to help you. We will answer any questions and share our extensive resources.

Each year, the UM Historical Society sponsors a church history contest. The winners are ann-ounced at our exhibit at annual conference. They receive a framed certificate and are noted in the Historical Society newsletter.

There are three categories for the contest: Class I for churches up to 200 members; Class II for churches with 201-500 members; and Class III for churches with more than 500 members.

To enter, submit two copies of the history, and fill out the contest form, available by calling the museum at (410) 889-4458 or e-mail to The deadline for submission is March 31.

James E. Reeves is the Baltimore-Washington Conference director of Archives and History.
