Church has eye witness in Katrina areas

ODENTON - Barry Oren, a member of Nichols-Bethel UMC, sends word from the Gulfport area of Mississippi, where he continues to work on Katrina Recovery. He was a member of the Annapolis District VIM team that helped with home reconstruction in February.

'It still looks like a war zone or a third world country,' Oren said, 'but things are getting better. ? We need to constantly remind others of the huge needs for on-going help.

'We are making progress in the Gulf States area!' he writes. 'We toured the Waveland (Miss.) area and I found it very heart-warming to see new massive clean-up completed, heavy equipment either on sites or actually working on sites and we even saw new construction in progress! In particular we saw the finishing touches being put on the ?temporary? Gulfside Convention Center - which included seven large portable classroom style facilities connected together to make a large rectangular building. This was directly adjacent to a large, quonset hut style worship center.'

The United Methodist Gulfside Assembly site was completely ravished in Katrina, with no buildings or facilities left standing.

Oren headed to New Orleans June 1, to direct setting up two seven-week camps, where volunteers come for one-week stays. 'Please pray for us all,' he said.
