Church fills need for preschool

Posted by Bwcarchives on

DEALE - In spring 2005, members of Cedar Grove UMC responded to needs expressed by families in southern Anne Arundel County by opening a preschool in the church?s education unit.

Due in part to the school administrator, Amy Heinrichs, whose husband is pastor of student ministries at the church, the school opened with eight students in January 2006. This fall, there are 40.

Three-year-olds meet for a half day on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and four-year-olds meet three days a week.

The school?s mission, Heinrich said, 'is to provide quality, affordable preschool education.' Parents know that membership in the church is not required, but that Christian teaching is at the core of the curriculum, and each day starts with prayer. Bible stories and Christian songs are taught along with traditional curriculum.

Since September, three preschool families have visited the church and put their children in its Sunday school, Heinrichs said.
