Church continues Katrina recovery

Posted by Bwcarchives on

TOWSON - Nineteen members of Towson UMC spent Jan. 7 to 20 helping New Orleans residents recover from 2005?s Hurricane Katrina. 'The work was very, very hard,' said Merrill Frank, the church?s lay leader, describing their success in demolishing the flooded, molded and decayed interiors of five houses. It was also satisfying, he added.

The members stayed at St. Paul?s UMC in nearby Harahan, where they spent one day helping the church to recover. They painted walls and removed a dropped ceiling.

It was Towson UMC?s fourth mission trip to areas damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Previous teams went to Port Ritchie, Fla., Gulfport, Miss., and on another trip to New Orleans. So far, 31 church members have been on mission trips to Katrina recovery sites.

'It?s been a year-and-a-half since the flood,' Frank said, 'yet the damaged homes still number in the thousands. It?s unbelievable; much more work is needed.'

Another group left for New Orleans last week. 'We?ll go back again and again,' Frank said.
