Church celebrates its bicentennial

Posted by Bwcarchives on

CAMP SPRINGS ? Circuit riding preachers came on horseback 200 years ago to preach, marry, bury and encourage the congregation of Bells, the newly organized church in the rural areas between what is now Camp Springs and Suitland. In 1813, Bishop Francis Asbury preached at the little white church that started as a Wesleyan style class meeting led by James Beall (pronounced Bell).

Washington East District Superintendent, the Rev. Mary Jane Coleman, followed in Asbury's footsteps as she led the bicentennial worship Feb. 27, praising the members for their long history and encouraging them to minister to the future in the communities around them.

The Sunday service was the kick-off event for a year of activities celebrating this important milestone, said the Rev. Laura Schultz.
