COURTESY OF EMMARTS UMC
| | WOODLAWN ? As part of the observance of its 200th anniversary, the congregation of Emmarts UMC heard from Baltimore West District Superintendent, the Rev. Eugene Matthews, on March 16. Matthews 'skillfully and passionately challenged, admonished, pushed and praised the diverse congregation ? to do more, to grow without and within, and to pray,' reported Claire Dorsey. Memories were shared of the church's role in the anti-slavery Underground Railroad, in protest marches, in starting house churches and Sunday schools, in surviving prosperous times and lean times with fluctuating attendance. More anniversary events will follow throughout the year.
