Children donate Bibles for inmates

WALDORF - The confirmation class at Calvary UMC recently presented 500 Bibles to the Charles County Sheriff's Office for use at the county detention center. The sixth- and seventh-graders spearheaded the effort to raise half the funds for the Bibles. The Maryland Bible Society picked up the rest of the tab.

'Their gift will serve the detention center for years to come and will hopefully have a lasting effect on the inmates who take advantage of the opportunity to study and practice the Word of the Lord,' said Sheriff Frederick E. Davis as he accepted the gift.

After the presentation, the sheriff led the group on a tour of the women's facilities, said the Rev. James Chance. During confirmation class, Chance taught that visiting in jails is a part of the Wesleyan tradition.
