Bid to save lives

Posted by Bwcarchives on
How much money would you bid to safeguard the life of a child? The lives of 100 children?

For $10, Nothing But Nets, a United Methodist-sponsored program, will provide an insecticide-treated bed net to a child in Africa that will protect him from malaria.

At annual conference, local churches will have the opportunity to save a multitude of lives by bidding on a basketball signed by the bishops of The United Methodist Church.

At General Conference, annual conferences bid on such a basketball, with the winning conference paying $80,000.

The bidding was not part of the planned program, it erupted spontaneously from the hearts of the delegates, said Bishop Thomas Bickerton, who will be speaking at annual conference.

Delegation chairs Delores Oden and the Rev. Laura Easto are hoping the same happens at the May session of the Baltimore-Washington Conference.

Churches are encouraged to bid – and bid big. The winner will be the children of Africa.
