Tradition has it that Emmarts UMC was a stop on the Underground Railway. Whether or not that is accurate, the Emmarts-Pierpont house, a short distance away, and its master, Caleb Emmarts, who gave the land on which the church is built, certainly were.

Bessie Crosson, 82, the wife of the Rev. Calvin P. Crosson, died Jan. 16, at Shady Grove Hospital. The Rev. James Bishop Sr. officiated at her funeral service at Goshen UMC Jan. 24. The Revs. Mamie Williams, Eugene Matthews and Alfreda Wiggins participated.

Crosson was a trained Stephen Minister, and worked for many years as a den mother in Scouting. In 1974, she received the highest recognition given by Civic Associations in the D.C. area, as well as several other awards for meritorious community service through the Fort Dupont Civic Association.

After her husband, William Clark, died, she married Crosson in 1976. They had known each other since his appointment to Jones Memorial UMC in 1969, where she had been a member since 1957.

She shared ministry with him in the churches he subsequently served: Howard Park in 1976 and John Wesley UMC in Baltimore, 1978-1990. She became a spiritual leader in the churches and led worship for the N.M. Carroll Home.

He retired in 1990 and they moved to Asbury Methodist Village and joined Goshen UMC.

Survivors include her husband; son William J. Clark of Forrest Hill and daughter Carol D. White of Baltimore from her first marriage; and step-daughter Deloris Jones of Lanham; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Condolences may be sent to Rev. Calvin Crosson, 407 Russell Ave., G2, Gaithersburg, MD 20877.
