Argo appointed new DS

The Rev. David Argo has been appointed by Bishop Felton Edwin May, effective July 1, as the new superintendent of the Washington-Columbia District. He follows the Rev. E. Allen Stewart, who served as superintendent for three years in the Annapolis District, and five years in the Washington-Columbia District.

Stewart also served as pastor of churches in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and at Grace UMC in Takoma Park.

Argo is currently serving as pastor of St. Pauls UMC in Kensington in the Washington West District, where he was appointed in 2000.

Im really looking forward to working with the pastors, Argo said. I feel strongly that the local congregations are where ministry takes place. I want to encourage and resource pastors.

Argo said that becoming a district superintendent is an exciting opportunity. Im excited about working in the diversity of the congregations in the district, he said.

Im particularly passionate about what influence D.C. congregations can have on political decisions made in the city, he said. At Capitol Hill UMC, we got involved with ways of holding government accountable. Argo wants to continue that process for all his congregations, both in and out of the District. Congregations in Maryland can get engaged in Annapolis, he said.

Im also passionate about how the church responds to marginalized people those who are homeless, affected by drugs or alcohol, he said.

I feel that the purpose of the church is to provide a place where God can change lives. I want to help people create that space where God can change lives.

Ordained a deacon in the Western North Carolina Conference, he graduated from Boston Seminary in 1972 with a Master of Divinity degree. He was granted a doctoral degree in sociology from American University in 1983.

Prior to St. Pauls, Argo served the Indian Head Charge, Eldbrooke, Glenelg and Capitol Hill churches in the Baltimore-Washington Conference.

He and his wife, Linda, have three children: Ben, Emily and Devon. Linda Argo works as chief of staff for the office of the Chief Technology Officer for the Washington, D.C., city government.

Argo lists white water kayaking as one of his hobbies, a sport he picked up five years ago. Youll often see the bottom of my kayak on the Potomac River, he said. Humility is a virtue in this sport.
