Area UMs lend leadership to denominational committees

Several BWC members were recently elected to serve on churchwide committees, boards and agencies.

As part of the connectional system, members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference were elected to provide leadership for the denomination by serving on a number of General and Jurisdictional committees for the next four years.

The Rev. Ianther Mills, superintendent of the Washington East District will serve on the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Charlie Moore of Community UMC in Crofton will continue to provide leadership on the General Board of Finance and Administration. The Rev. Joan Carter-Rimbach of First UMC in Hyattsville will continue to serve on the General Board of Global Ministries.

Melissa Lauber, an editor on the Baltimore-Washington Conference staff, was elected to be on the General Commission on Communications and Michael Parker of John Wesley UMC in Baltimore will serve on the General Board of Church and Society.

Sharon Darlynn McCrae was chosen to serve in the Office of Christian Unity and Interreligious Relationships. McCrae was also elected to serve as assistant secretary for the Northeastern Jurisdiction.

The Rev. David Simpson of Bethany UMC in Ellicott City was elected to serve as the treasurer of the Jurisdiction for the next quadrennium. He replaces Dight Craine of the New England Conference who has served in that role for 27 years.

Also elected to serve on jurisdictional committees are BWC Lay Leader Delores Martin and BWC Director of Connectional Ministries the Rev. David Argo, who will both be on the Vision Team.

The Rev. J.W. Park of Fairhaven UMC in Gaithersburg will be on the jurisdictional Committee on Finance and Administration, Chris Schliekert, the director of Camp Manidokan near Harpers Ferry, W.Va., will serve on the Programs and Arrangements Committee and the Rev. Laura Easto, pastor of Westminster UMC, will be a member of the committee on annual conference boundaries.

The Rev. Brian Shockey of Emory UMC in Street was named by the College of Bishops to serve on the jurisdictional Committee on Appeals and the Rev. Karin Walker, superintendent of the Baltimore Suburban District and the Rev. Rod Miller of Towson UMC will serve on the Committee on Investigation. Jen Ihlo of Capital Hill UMC will lead the NEJ’s Rules Committee.
