A place of the heart offers beds and more

Posted by Bwcarchives on

BALTIMORE - From November until mid-April, volunteers from Rodgers Forge UMC work with their sister church, St. John's of Baltimore City UMC, at its mission called Heart's Place, an emergency shelter for homeless people.

The shelter can accommodate 25 guests, who often line up early hoping to get a spot. Guests are guaranteed a bed for four nights, Sunday through Wednesday, if they return on time each afternoon.

Staff and guests work alongside each other to do chores like making sandwiches for the lunch bags and keeping the bathroom clean, said Louise Hellwig from Rodgers Forge, who volunteers regularly. The shelter provides beds, meals, showers, used clothing, laundering, hygiene items, new underwear and socks. There is also a counseling service and referrals.

'They treat you with a little respect here,' said John Jelinek, one of the guests.
