PARKVILLE ? At the helm of the twice-a-year oyster and ham dinners at Hiss UMC is Mardy Peters. She's been chairing the major fund-raising event for 24 years, and will continue 'as long as the Lord lets me,' the 73-year-old said.

Peters, who also chairs the church Board of Trustees, is a committed volunteer. But she doesn't work alone. Nearly 75 church members help in one way or another. 'I enjoy doing it,' she said.

This spring the church made about $7,000. The proceeds from the dinners 'help to balance the budget,' said church secretary Janet Nelson.

Peters credits some of that income to the famous pickled beets, which the church serves and sells. 'I don't think we would have made that much without the beets,' she said.
