Vandals strike Fowler UMC
On June 8, vandals broke a glass window with a brick at Fowler UMC in Annapolis and came through the basement. “You would think they were coming to steal, but they just came to destroy,” said the Rev. Jerome Jones. “They destroyed all the computers, threw down the big Methodist cross from the wall, and ripped -- page by page -- every page from every hymnal and Bible.”
“It was truly a hate crime. … They destroyed five televisions, damaged the mixing board, all the mic cords. They did not want us to be able to communicate at all, to talk about Jesus Christ,” Jones said.
The church’s Board of Trustees and many in the congregation went to work on the clean-up effort. Individuals, District Superintendent Sarah Schlieckert and other United Methodist pastors prayed, offered support and sent items for Sunday worship. Everyone seemed to perform the clean-up with the thought on their minds that “we are living in a hurting world. We said a prayer for them in worship,” Jones said.
Sunday worship was hard. Some members felt vulnerable and expressed fear about going to church, but they attended anyway. Jones “asked the Lord that the act of vandalism bring a greater display of God’s glory.” He prayed that “the restoration process would touch hearts and lives,” and he gave thanks that “even in the darkest of times, God’s light cannot be extinguished.”
The police forensics team was on site after the break-in and found several fingerprints. They believe the same people may have been responsible for other incidents in the area.
Although his heart is heavy, Jones wants those who tried to destroy the church to know that they are forgiven and that God loves them. We would like to be a light in their dark situation so that they know God is able to heal and deliver them.”
He said he and the congregation are “just so glad for the love that comes with being United Methodist. “When one hurts, all hurt, when one rejoices, we all rejoice.”
He finds himself reflecting on the theme of love that was so prevalent at the recent Annual Conference session. “Even though it’s over, it’s still not over,” he said. “The love lingers; love conquers all. Sometimes you have to endure, but as you endure, it refines your faith and helps you to produce a greater hope.”
Isaiah 40:10 and 13
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed for I am thy God : I will strengthen thee; I will help thee; yea. I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness 13. For I the Lord thy God Will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. Amen
Thank you Pastor Jones for always encouraging us and letting us know that God has something better for us. If we just keep the faith. To God Be The Glory
It is important, that we recognize God in your recovery as He works to strengthen your faith in our God. God bless you I pray for your recovery.
I pray for the congregation of Fowler UM Church, it must be difficult to forgive and love those who have demonstrated so much hate, but Ephesian 4:31 states "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away...along with all malice." Our faith in God and the teachings of Jesus Christ will encourage you to pray for the souls of those who have hateful hearts.
We are so sorry to hear this horrible news. Centenary UMC in Shady Side will pray for you.
What else can we - all of us - do to help. What are your needs?

God allow the congregation to see, hear and trust you. The call of a Disciple can be one of fear. It can be one of disappointments. But remember God call Fowler UMC and the congregation to trust Him. He is with you and will bring you through it.

I am a United Methodist pastor serving on the staff of a the Orchard Park, NY Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in retirement. I am sharing the story of your and your congregations' response to this hateful act in this Sunday's sermon. Our people will be praying for you!
Our hearts are broken with the news of these senseless acts! We, the Pastors of Refuge Church Ministries II, Glen Burnie,
stand with our friends and family in the faith. God is still in control and we love you Fowler UMC!
This is truly hatred and sign of of evil
On this earth . Fowler had just had an amazing Pentecost Revival a few days before ,I had the honor to attend, which represented the birth of the CHURCH . We pray what was meant for evil brings an abundance of good to Pastor Jones & this Congregation . We pray for those whose mind & hatred planed and carry out this Act . We pray for their souls & we will love them despite of their malicious hatred . Church continue your assignment . Love you
My prayers are with you. I am reminded in John 10:10 the Bible states "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." I believe the more abundantly is upon this congregation and I can not wait to see what God does in this rebuilding season. May the hearts of those who committed this act be changed and the pain that is obviously being outwardly displayed here be replaced with joy in Jesus! Amen.
Our God sees all and knows all. May you be strengthened, encouraged, and supported by His love and the love of a community mobilized by Him to supply your needs. I lift up your church and the minds and souls of the vandals in prayer.
Beloved, I was extremely angry upon learning what occurred at Fowlers UM Church. This is another blatant act of disrespect towards the House of God! It is indicative of the escalation of hatred that is being perpetrated in this Nation today! It is my prayer that the wider Faith Community collectively will rally behind this Pastor and Congregation in demonstrating their support. My Late Godparents were faithful members. Finally, I pray that when the perpetrators are apprehended, they will be prosecuted to fullest extent of the law!

This act of senseless vandalism came to our collective attention at the Mountain Sky Annual Conference today. We are in prayer for you and ask God's blessings to help your recovery. The property damage can be repaired and replaced but the emotional damage can not be seen or swept up. May God's grace help you cope and heal from this terrible act. We are brothers and sisters under Christ's name. Diane Hall
